What my momma taught me

In spirit of Mother's Day this past weekend
I was reminiscing about what my mom instilled in me
Even though she passed away in 2012, her teachings stay with me

What my momma taught me:

  1. Don't waste your time worrying about what other people think of you!

  2. Never ever think you are better than anyone, ever!

  3. Live your life to the fullest and have fun!

I do my best to follow these truths daily
but I'm human, so I fall short and
it seems like comparison is a major reason

As soon as I start to compare
BOOM
I start feeling powerless and I get lost in a fog of judgements

I worry about what other people are going to think
I don't believe we are all the same anymore and
I stop having fun

Comparison is natural
it is a big reason why we humans have survived all these years
it was designed to keep us safe and away from danger or getting hurt

Comparison is also very common
It comes from family dynamics, your environment, your friends
your neighbours, the media, your partner and perfect strangers

But very quickly it takes you out of your rational brain
The part of your brain that says
Hey, calm down we are all humans

we are just in different meat suites
(that will eventually disappear one day)
don't worry, nobody has it all figured out
We are just here to enjoy this very short ride called the game of life!

When I catch myself comparing I remind myself
that we are all unique, nobody is supposed to be the same
we each have our own flavour to offer the world

And I like to visualise what my mom would actually say
if I shared my self doubts with her.
I smile because it would be filled with a lot of curse words and laughter!

What did your momma teach you!?

A great book that will help you embrace yourself (like your momma would) The Gifts of Imperfection by: Brene Brown
